COSMETIC ORTHODONTICS IS NOT PERFORMED. Our pets do NOT need a picture-perfect smile, BUT they are entitled to a pain-free mouth. There are two main types of orthodontics in veterinary dentistry: passive and active force appliances. Passive force is when the pet gets to control the amount of pressure AND how often that pressure is placed. Active forces are when an appliance has a continuous force and degree of which is controlled by the appliance. Pictured are examples of passive (inclined plane and crown extensions) as well as active (buttons or brackets and elastic power chains).
